Dynamic vs. Static QR Codes

Print once. Edit forever — if you choose dynamic.

The single biggest difference between QuickCode and a free QR generator you'd find with a quick search: our codes don't have to be frozen the moment you download them. Understanding the difference between static and dynamic QR codes is the key to understanding why teams outgrow free tools.

Static QR codes

A static QR code has its data — a URL, a Wi-Fi password, contact details — baked directly into the pattern of the image itself. What you generate is what scanners will always read.

  • Nothing to manage after creation: no account, no dashboard dependency
  • Fine for one-off, permanent destinations that will never change
  • Can't be edited, redirected, or corrected once printed — a typo or an outdated link means reprinting everything
  • No scan data: you'll never know if anyone actually used it

Dynamic QR codes

A dynamic QR code doesn't encode your destination directly — it encodes a short QuickCode redirect URL. That redirect is what you control, and you can repoint it anytime, as many times as you like, without touching the printed or published code.

  • Editable after printing — change the destination URL, swap a menu, update a contact card, all without reprinting
  • Unlocks analytics — every scan passes through your redirect, so it can be logged, timestamped, and attributed (see Analytics & Tracking)
  • Supports scheduling and A/B redirects — point the same code to different destinations by time of day, campaign, or test variant
  • Small ongoing dependency: the code relies on the redirect service staying live (which is exactly what QuickCode is built for)

Why this matters

Every print run, every sign, every packaging batch is a bet that the destination behind your QR code will still be right by the time someone scans it. Dynamic QR codes remove that bet — and add a feedback loop on top, so you know whether the code is even getting used.

This is the foundation the rest of the platform builds on: analytics, campaign scheduling, and redirect-level A/B testing are only possible because the destination lives on QuickCode's servers, not baked into the printed pattern.
